It Lingered
Nothing about this day stood still. Not the wind, not the music, not the way Reuben and Cara moved through it all together. High up in the Swellendam mountains, the wind showed up uninvited and stayed all day, turning veils into wings, hair into poetry, and moments into motion. Add live music, deep emotion, and two wildly creative humans, and you get a wedding that felt alive from start to finish. Still in Motion isn’t just a gallery title, it’s exactly how this day felt.
Elegant, wind-swept, and filled with worship. Cara and Reuben’s wedding at Joubertsdal in Swellendam was one of those days that lingers in your heart long after the last song has been sung. The setting was breathtaking, the day beautifully warm, and the atmosphere filled with peace.
Cara and Reuben are the kind of couple you immediately feel at ease around: elegant, romantic, deeply kind, and so grounded in who they are. It felt especially meaningful for me to be there, as I had photographed Cara’s cousin wedding a couple of years ago. Seeing familiar faces again made the day feel even more personal, like walking into a celebration of friends rather than clients.
Let's have a look at the journey.
The One-Minute Version
If you want the vibe without the scroll, this is it.
A minute of wind, music, emotion, laughter, and the kind of moments you don’t plan, they just happen. Turn the sound up, feel the feeling, and let this be your sneak peek into Reuben and Cara’s day as it unfolded.

A Prelude

Before the wedding day ever arrived, I met Reuben and Cara in Stellenbosch, the place where they study, create, and spend so much of their everyday life together. Music runs through both of them, so naturally, we ended up in a piano room at The University of Stellenbosch, letting the session unfold between keys, laughter, and quiet moments.

And then there was the dress. Cara wore her grandmother’s wedding dress: a piece of history, love, and legacy woven straight into the start of their story. It was intimate, creative, and deeply personal. A perfect prelude to the day that was coming.

Wind, Chaos & a Very Good Time
on the mountain
If you’re wondering whether the wind calmed down? It did not.
Up in the mountains, it was full chaos: hair everywhere, dresses doing their own thing, everyone holding on for dear life.
And honestly? It was incredible.
The bridal party fully committed, brought the energy, and leaned into the madness. What could’ve been stressful turned into pure fun, the kind of moments that feel real, unfiltered, and very them. Proof that you don’t need perfect conditions to make magic.

When Love Sounds Like Music
Music has always been woven into their story. Their engagement shoot in Stellenbosch was such a reflection of who they are. We wandered through the streets, exploring corners and textures, before ending at the piano, because Cara studies music, and both she and Reuben are incredibly musical. It was natural. Effortless. So them.

On the wedding day, music once again became the language of their love. Cara walked down the aisle to a song she composed for Reuben. There are not many dry eyes when a bride walks toward her groom, but when she walks to her own composition, written from her heart? It was sacred. And then during the reception, Reuben surprised her. In the middle of his speech, he sat down at the piano, played, and sang a song he had written just for her. It was intimate and deeply moving, a love letter wrapped in melody.

Suiting up

Reuben’s morning was calm, grounded, and full of meaning. His mom helped him get ready, a moment that felt both tender and steady. Cara gifted him a small notebook filled with handwritten letters, a quiet reminder of what the day was really about.
Surrounded by his best friend, his brother, and future brother in laws, the atmosphere stayed relaxed and genuine. No rush. No fuss. Just intention, connection, and a lot of quiet excitement.

final touches
Watching Cara get ready felt like watching a story come full circle. Her mom and grandmother were right there, hands steady, helping her into her dress, button by button, moment by moment. Three generations in one room, sharing something sacred.
Her bridesmaids’ reactions were pure joy, her elegance effortless. Cara’s grandmother stayed close throughout the morning, a constant, gentle presence. And when her dad saw her for the first time, one of those moments that stops time just long enough to feel it fully.
A standout moment? Cara’s mom helping her dad get ready before seeing his daughter as a bride for the first time.

Music up. Shoes off. No holding back. The dance floor filled fast and stayed full. Laughter, movement, sweat, joy — the kind of celebration where everyone is in it. A night that didn’t want to end and memories that will last long after the music faded.

AND THEY ALL DANCED HAPPILY EVER AFTER
